Topic: Personality, behaviour and performance at work

This talk will discuss critical issues regarding individual behaviour and performance in the workplace.  To understand how to manage our teams in an ever-changing and complex environment, we have to understand what makes people perform effectively or ineffectively.  And there's no easy answer; people are complex, as are the environments they work in.  However, if we can better understand why people think and act as they do, we can begin to get the best out of them.  These issues, and their practicalities, will be discussed, drawing on the academic research and Burch and Anderson's (2008) causal model of work-related behaviour and performance.

JULY BRANCH MEETING

Date:  Thursday, 16th July 2009

Topic:  Living through Project Nightmares - When customers don't pay, what do you do?

Only 18 months ago. Business Mechanix nearly lost it all.  A ten year old business, well regarded and well respected, nearly went down the drain when two significant projects failed to pay.  Cashflow was impacted, morale was down and the court doors opened -- a rude awakening to what the courts think of Change Control in projects and what a Project Budget Estimate is really good for.

Through a total shift in Project Processes, Business Mechanix just had their most profitable month ever.  And, just by the way, their bad debts have never looked better..

Speaker:  Lyndal Stewart, one of the Directors at Business Mechanix ,

Speaker:  Philip Squire, Production Manager/Scientist, Living Cell Technologies

May Branch MeetingWhat's Agile all about, and would it work for my project?

"Agile" has been gaining prominence in IT projects over the last few years, and many project managers and PMOs want to know more about what it could mean for their projects.  This session will explore:

.  Just what is Agile?  The map of the landscape, and where it all came from.

.  How does it change the way I manage a project?

.  How does it change the way the PMO works?

.  Why would I use Agile for my project? (I'm not in IT, so is Agile useful for me?)

.  What's the future of Agile and the PMBOK?

.  Where do I start?

Carolyn will use practical examples from her recent projects to illustrate the practices of Agile, its benefits and its limitations.

The presentation will end with a Q & A session to allow you to explore Agile topics further.

Date:  Thursday, 21st May 2009

Venue:  Level 3, Owen Glenn Building, The University of Auckland.

Speaker:  Carolyn Sanders, PMP, CSM
