Prevent Project Failure through the Use of Earned Value Management Systems

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has always been a leader in the development of project management concepts and tools. They also lead in the application of these tools to plan and control the execution of complex projects.

In December of 1996, the DoD officially adopted a system of Earned Value Management System (EVMS) requirements for their contractors to use for tracking and communication purposes. These principles and methods are not only applicable to large military contracts. They can be extended to projects of all sizes, all types, and all industries.

This workshop will expose you to EVMS and show you how you can adopt these measures to help you plan, evaluate, and control your project to maximize the probability of project success.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is designed for individuals with an understanding of the basics of project management principles who would like to improve the success rate of their projects. It is ideal for project managers, cost and schedule analysts, technical managers, and executives who oversee project organizations.

How You Will Benefit:

Through lecture, open discussion, and team exercises you will be able to:

  • Apply planning principles to optimize the use of EVMS control systems
  • Know how best to define project scope
  • Identify which components of EVMS map best to your industry
  • Understand the difference in near term vs. long term planning approaches
  • Develop standards and metrics to track and measure project success
  • Monitor and Evaluate "actual" data
  • Recognize a project that is out of control or going out of control
  • Identify basic causes of troubled projects
  • Prevent small problems from escalating into large problems
  • Improve your ability to deliver projects on schedule and within budget

Your Workshop Experience Will Cover:

The Concepts and Objectives of EVMS - Understand the benefits of EVMS, learn about its components, and get an appreciation for its success as a project control system.

Activity Planning - Learn the difference between Work Packages and Planning Packages. Understand how this will affect your approach to short and long term planning. Also, why it is important to select the proper duration for your tracking tasks.

Benefits of Proper Work Definition - See how proper planning helps managers credibly request appropriate resources and provide the basis against which performance can be measured.

Performance Measures and Criteria - Learn simple but powerful metrics that will allow you to measure performance based on an objective set of technical criteria. Get an understanding of how to set acceptable tolerance levels using these indicators.

Performance Measurement Baseline - Learn how to integrate cost and schedule information into a unified measurement system. Gain an understanding of how to incorporate critical path analysis into EVMS for planning, tracking, and forecasting purposes.

Project Monitoring - Identify what data is necessary to be gathered, by whom, and at what frequency. Learn how to integrate this data and to identify what is relevant and what is not.

Project Evaluation and Control - Learn how to measure the health of your project. See how to isolate problem areas, identify basic sources of problems, and take corrective action as necessary to prevent small problems from mushrooming into large problems. Make management decisions with the confidence that the probability of project success will be increased.

Forecasting - Learn how to use EVMS to forecast project costs and schedules. Gain an understanding of the pitfalls of forecasting and enhance the accuracy of your projections.

Project Communications - Learn how to use EVMS to communicate project status, forecasts, and plans. Develop objective measures to support the justification of management decisions to all stakeholders including team members, upper management, and customers.
